In Serbia, pharmacies are both publicly and privately owned. In each case, one needs a prescription for medications other than the usual over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin. Public pharmacies generally sell both generic medicine that is nationally produced and name brand medicines that have been imported. Serbs do not pay for prescriptions at the public pharmacy. It is often the case that public pharmacies run out of medicines, and one must track down the medicine at a private pharmacy. Private pharmacies charge more for over-the-counter medications, and even Serbs are charged for prescriptions.
