Spanish in Argentina

Time

A person asking another person for the time

The 24-hour clock is the basis for written time in Argentina. However, when speaking about time, either the 12 or 24-hour clock is appropriate.

Argentines tend to be relatively punctual. There is roughly a fifteen minute variable when meeting a friend for dinner -- a half hour at most before one would be considered rudely late. For social engagements where many people are attending, there is more flexibility; however, even in this situation an hour after the appointed time would be the limit. One is expected to be on time at school or in a business situation.

On weekdays, most stores and businesses open between 8:00-9:00 a.m., close between noon and 1:00 p.m and re-open around 3:00 p.m.to close at 9:00 p.m. While businesses close for both weekend days, most stores are open from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturdays and close on Sundays. Schools in Argentina are open Monday through Friday with varying time schedules depending on the grade.
