Public markets sell everything from clothing and fresh food to furniture, electronics, housewares, books, stationery, hardware, wood, and cement. The markets are open from dawn until dusk seven days a week including holidays. There are two large well-known public markets in Managua. One is more appropriate for tourists than the other; a foreigner should inquire as to which market is the safest. In addition to these two large markets, there are many smaller ones throughout the city. Each of the smaller towns has a public market as well. Malls throughout Nicaragua offer the usual selection of clothing, houehold goods, furniture and accessories. In both cities and smaller towns, there are many small neighborhood stores, as well as convenience stores operated from individual homes.
